Welcome to Cotton’s Corner, a weekly blog about books, writing, mental health, and all things Harry Potter or other-fandom-related! Let’s get started, shall we?
- What is Cotton’s Corner?
I started Cotton’s Corner as an outlet for my ever-racing thoughts. I think A LOT about all sorts of things, particularly about reading and writing. New topics are posted at least once a week, maybe even two if I’m feeling spunky. These topics range from my adventures in writing my novels and stories to books I’m reading, and once a month I talk about mental health.
And I occasionally gush about how much I love Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Supernatural, and other things you may have heard of, but didn’t watch because you were afraid of being judged. Don’t worry, that’s what I’m here for.
Some of my favorite book genres are:
- Mythology – Greek and Nordic
- Young Adult Fantasy
- Adult Fiction
2. Who are you?
My name is Amber Cotton and I’m 27, living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I’m originally from Alabama and moved to the Twin Cities to be with my husband. Every time I visit my hometown and return, I feel like I’ve just traveled between two countries.
Although I would love to spend my days reading and writing all day like I did when I was younger, I have an adult job that pays the bills. I’m a paralegal working in patents, and I have prior experience in trademark and copyright law as well. Before you ask, no I can’t answer any questions you have about applying for intellectual property rights. There are people who paid exorbitant amounts of money to go to law school and pass an exam that says that they can give you advice. I just do everything else.
A few of the things I’m really passionate about other than items listed above:
- Slow cooker meals or anything else I can throw together and it turns into yummy deliciousness
- Video games – particularly those with a detective or stealth element such as the Batman Arkham series, Hitman series, or Sherlock Holmes series. Decision-based gaming to like TellTale games features. Don’t know what that is? Check out the TellTale website here for all their kick-ass titles. No, they didn’t pay me to say that. I told you, I’m passionate.
- Bruce Willis movies
- Quentin Tarintino movies
- Kevin Smith movies
- Movies in general and discussions about movies
- Why post about mental health?
Aside from being just as important as physical health, I have a particular interest. I was diagnosed with bipolar type II disorder and panic disorder. In a rough sense, bipolar disorder causes me to feel two extremes of the emotional spectrum: mania and hardcore depression. However, the things I talk about aren’t only good for me and I think certain topics are beneficial to everyone in general.
To learn more about bipolar disorder, please go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and educate yo’self.
